Discovered by Scott Carney in 2001, the Bat Pattern remains one of the most reliable 5-point geometric reversal frameworks in technical market analysis. Because the completion point (D) requires an extreme 0.886 Fibonacci retracement of the initial XA leg, the invalidation point sits just beyond point X, giving disciplined technicians an asymmetric reward-to-risk ratio often exceeding 3:1.
The Critical Role of the B-Point Filter
The single most frequent mistake among novice harmonic traders is confusing a Bat Pattern with a Gartley Pattern. The distinction hinges entirely on the exact retracement of point B relative to the primary XA leg:
- In a Gartley Pattern, point B must terminate precisely near the 0.618 retracement of XA (ideally between 0.580 and 0.650).
- In a Bat Pattern, point B must hold a shallow retracement between 0.382 and 0.500 of XA. If point B closes above the 0.618 level, the Bat pattern is formally disqualified.
Constructing the Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ)
The Potential Reversal Zone for a valid Bat pattern is established by three overlapping harmonic elements:
- The 0.886 XA Retracement: The dominant defining price level of the pattern.
- The 1.618 to 2.618 BC Projection: An extreme Fibonacci extension of the internal B-to-C swing.
- The AB=CD or Alternate 1.272 AB=CD Projection: Providing structural symmetry within the internal corrective oscillation.
When these three criteria converge within a narrow price range, technicians wait for a definitive price action trigger—such as an engulfing candle or momentum divergence on an intraday oscillator—before executing the reversal setup with the initial stop set safely beyond point X.
